What is a Too Clever answer?
The 15-point tier, and the only tier in the game that is defined by a player’s intention rather than by the crowd’s behaviour. It is the answer you choose because it sounds like it should be rare — and the ladder reports that it was not rare at all.
The name is the diagnosis. Not “wrong”, not “boring”: too clever, the answer of someone trying to be interesting on purpose.
Why does the interesting choice pay so little?
Because interestingness is manufactured in batches. Ask a room for a shark and the automatic answer is the great white; ask the same room for a shark that is not the great white and almost everyone reaches into the same small bag — hammerhead, whale shark, goblin shark. The first group is dense and obvious, the second group is dense and feels original from the inside.
A prepared ladder sees both groups as concentrations. It prices the first at 10 and the second just above it, because both are things the crowd does.
How can I tell Too Clever from Rare before typing?
Three quick checks, all of which fit inside a couple of seconds:
- The set test. If two or three sibling answers come to mind immediately, you are holding a set. Sets are crowded by definition.
- The source test. Did this answer come from a listicle, a “top ten” video, or a riddle you already knew? Then it is a famous answer, not a rare one.
- The naming test. If you know the answer only as a category label — “some kind of deep sea fish” — it is probably not in the ladder at all, and a rejected answer earns nothing.
What passes all three is usually an answer with a proper name, or a literal reading of the prompt that nobody else used. Those are the Deep Cut and top-tier patterns.
What should I say instead?
The answer one level down from your instinct, not one level sideways. Sideways is where Too Clever lives: the same category, a more unusual-sounding member. Down is where Rare and Deep Cut live: a narrower, more exact member of the category you were already in.
Concretely: if your first thought is a large familiar example, the ladder’s deeper answers are usually smaller, older, more specific, or further away — not stranger. Strangeness is the axis players invent; specificity is the axis the ladder actually uses.
Is it ever right to gamble on Too Clever?
Yes, when the alternative is a rejection. Fifteen points beats zero, and if the clock is nearly out and the safe answer you have is one you are not sure the game recognises, the interesting answer is the better bet — it is at least likely to be in the ladder.
The reverse is the real rule: never take a Too Clever answer while a recognised safe answer is available. The trap only costs you when you choose it over a scored alternative, which is most of the time.
How much does the trap actually cost?
One prompt moves 30 to 15, so the run loses 15 points — barely visible. The damage is that players who like being clever take the 15 across five prompts, and then a 700-point ceiling turns into 550 without a single mistake anyone could point at.
That is why it earns its own page rather than a line in the tier table: the tier is cheap once and expensive as a habit. If you want the habit that replaces it, scoring deeper is the same skill pointed the other way.
